Vera was born August 10, 1923, in Fort Morgan, Colorado to
Marion and Elizabeth (Zach) Horton. She graduated from the eighth
grade at the one-room school in Hoyt, Colorado. On July 2, 1939,
she married Melvin Feyerherm in Fort Morgan. They lived on the
Zach family farm and had four children, Ruth who died in infancy,
Beverly, Milford, and Marilyn. When her mother became ill, she
helped rear her younger brother Howard. Vera and Melvin divorced
in 1954.
On June 11, 1945, the family moved to southwest Denver after
several years of devastating crop-ruining hail storms. The family
joined Redeemer Lutheran Church where they had a Lutheran
school for her children. She worked for a munitions factory in 1946,
Brechs Chocolate Factory, Jonas Brothers Furs, Miller's Supermarket
Bakery, Denver Kiddieland, Sigman Meats, Kwal Paint, Montgomery
Wards Catalog Warehouse, and Hatch's Cards and Gifts
during the years from 1947-1964.
On April 7, 1962, she married the love of her life, Wilfred (Bill)
Willis Weis, in Denver. They enjoyed camping, fishing and jeeping
together. In 1964, while on one of their fishing trips they found a
five acre orchard farm in Palisade, Colorado for sale. They came
home sold their house in Lakewood and moved to Palisade. The
peach orchard, garden, cows, pigs, chickens, rabbits and ducks were
her pride and joy. She provided all of us with lots of food that was
lovingly grown on the farm.
While keeping up with the farm she also worked for Montgomery
Wards in Grand Junction and Bill's Grocery Market in Palisade.
Vera had a passion for helping young people. She provided a home
and moral support for many young people until they could get back
on their feet or finish school. Her grandchildren, relatives, and
friends of the family spent many summers on the farm enjoying the
hospitality she was always willing to give. They sold the farm in
1994 and moved to a mobile home park in Palisade to give them
more freedom to relax, spend the cold months in Yuma, Arizona,
and travel.
Vera and Bill loved to travel. They started with their jeep and
pop-up camper trailer and gradually upgraded to a 32' camper trailer.
They visited all 50 states, took the RV all the way to Nome, Alaska,
Mexico City, Mexico and Nova Scotia. They also were able to take
a Caribbean and Alaskan cruise and an escorted tour visiting England,
France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, and Ireland.
After her loving husband Bill died in 2004, Vera moved to various
assisted living locations in Loveland, Grand Junction, Palisade and
finally to Bear Creek Nursing and Rehab in Morrison where she
died on July 1.
She is survived by two daughters, Beverly (Jack) Schneider of
Severance, CO; Marilyn (Walt Groves) Anderson of Idaho Springs,
CO; her brother, Howard (Linda) Horton of Palisade, CO; seven
grandchildren, David (Staci) O'Connell of Pocatello, ID; Donald
(Kathy) O'Connell of Fort Collins, CO; DeAnn (John) Duncan of
Berthoud, CO; Rick (Molly) Anderson of Redlands, CA; Greg (Allison)
Anderson of Eagle, CO; Eric (Robin) Weis of Windsor, CO,
and Jeremy (JJ) Weis of Parachute, CO; great-grandchildren, Zachary,
Chase, Kaley and Ryan O'Connell; Tye Duncan, Alex, Tanner,
Baylie, Jordan and Alexis Weis; Morgan, Blake, and Dylan
Anderson; a step-sister, Mary Ann Mayer, and step-grandson,
Trevor Schneider.
She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Ruth; her parents;
her son, Milford who died in 1981, and her husband, Bill.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5,
at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, 2515 F Road, Grand Junction, CO
followed by a graveside service at Palisade Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to Hospice in Vera's name.
