Funeral services for L. D. "Shorty" BENNETT of Sweetwater were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, at the Gypsum Community United Methodist Church.
Mr. BENNETT died Friday, April 29, near his home in Sweetwater. He was 67.
He was born Jan. 8, 1921, in Lockney, Texas, the son of Clyde and Berdie Thornton BENNETT. He was married March 9, 1947, in Clovis, N.M., to Mary Edna STOUT.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. BENNETT served as a guide and outfitter for Gene GODAT, packing hunters into the Hanging Lake area. He later worked for Dub and Wanda DANFORD, Golden BAIR and Jim STEVENS.
Mr. BENNETT worked at the Climax Mine near Leadville from 1954 until his retirement in 1975, when he moved to the Sweetwater area. He was an avid gardener, fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed visiting with people, and was especially fond of his grandchildren.
Mr. BENNETT was a member of the Cloud Club and the OCAW.
Surviving are his mother, Berdie Bennett of Clovis, N.M.; his wife, Mary BENNETT of Sweetwater; a son, Jerry BENNETT of Carlsbad, N.M.; three daughters, Janice ANDERSON of Los Lunas, N.M., Joan GODFREY of Denver, and Judy PETERSEN of Loma, Colo.; one brother, Carrol BENNETT of El Paso, Texas; three sisters, Dorothy TAYLOR of El Paso, Texas, Evalee HICKS of Clovis, N.M., and H. Ruth ROBINSON of Lubbock, Texas; -- grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Rev. James CAVENDER officiated at Tuesday morning's funeral service.
Burial was in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Gypsum.
Farnum-Richardson Mortuary of Glenwood Springs was in charge of arrangements.
