Doris C. Stewart July 19, 1912 – January 15, 2011 Doris Catherine Stewart died Saturday, January 15, 2011 at her home in Cedaredge. She was 98. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 with a service at 11:00 a.m. at the Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church, followed by an open house reception from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. at the Stolte Shed in Pioneer Town. A retrospective of Doris' long life will be on display there, including samples of her craft work, photos, and memorabilia. Mrs. Stewart was born July 19, 1912 in Cedaredge to Parker M. and Amanda (Johnson) Hart. She spent her early childhood in Cedaredge, starting school there. In 1922, the family moved to Pomona, California; Doris graduated from Pomona High School in 1930. After high school, she returned to Cedaredge where she married J. L. Stewart in 1932. In 1936, the couple moved to Denver, where their daughter, Naomi Jean, was born in 1940. During the early to mid-1940's they took in and cared for J.L.'s brother's two small children. They returned to Cedaredge in 1947, and son, Frank Parker, was born in Cedaredge that year. In 1948, J. L. was killed in an automobile accident. In 1949 she formed a partnership with her brother, Harold Hart and the two opened Hart's Grocery in Cedaredge. The business outgrew two successive locations on Cedaredge's Main Street, so Harold and Doris built the large building most recently occupied by Duckwall's. After selling the grocery business in 1963, Doris went to work at the First National Bank in Cedaredge, where she served as a clerk, cashier, and teller. A serious accident while picking cherries in the summer of 1975 disabled her for nearly a year, forcing her into early retirement. After learning to walk again, she resumed her active lifestyle and expanded her home-based business of selling nutritional supplements, natural cleaning products, and beauty supplies. She also turned her creative talent for crafting into a business, and after several years was selling her beautiful handmade items at craft shows around the area. Eventually her work found buyers as far away as New York City. In addition to her artistic talent, Doris was blessed with a lovely singing voice. During the early days of her marriage she was the singer with J. L.'s dance bands, and she continued singing throughout her life. In Cedaredge she sang in her church choir, and for many years was a sought-after soloist for funerals, weddings, lodges, and social events. Doris was very active in the Community United Methodist Church, as well as numerous other organizations and events in Cedaredge. She helped start the Little Britches Rodeo, serving as its Treasurer for several years. She served for a time on the Board of the Delta-Montrose Community Concert Association and helped promote their events. She co-chaired the Centennial-Bicentennial celebrations in the Surface Creek Valley in 1976, which ignited her passionate interest in preserving local history. In the early 1980's, she helped found the Surface Creek Valley Historical Society and worked tirelessly for three decades on behalf of Pioneer Town. Doris' Doll and Toy House in Pioneer Town is named in honor of her efforts to raise money for the building. The final project of her busy life was coordinating plans for placing a stone marker and a small garden at the Eckert Cemetery to honor her forebears, who donated the land for the cemetery. Doris was preceded in death by an infant daughter; her husband, J. L. Stewart; two sisters and three brothers. She is survived by a daughter, Naomi Stewart of Cedaredge, and a son, Frank Stewart of Aurora. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cedaredge Community United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 369, Cedaredge, CO 81413, to The Surface Creek Valley Historical Society, P.O. Box 906, Cedaredge, CO 81413, or to the Delta-Montrose Community Concert Association, P.O. Box 911, Delta, CO 81416.
