George Myron Chandler, age 83, passed away at home on Sept. 11 of metastatic prostate cancer.

George was born Feb. 23, 1928, to Myron and Florence Chandler in Kansas City, Mo. He had two older sisters, Jane and Barbara. George moved to Colorado in 1945 to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he met his future wife, Marjorie Sample. George spent his summers working for the U.S. Forest Service in the high country of Colorado.

George and Marge were married in 1952 in New Castle while he was home on leave from the U.S. Navy after serving in Guam. After the wedding, he returned to naval service as a radarman on the aircraft carrier USS Boxer.

After his discharge from the Navy, George and Marge returned to Colorado. He went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller at the Eagle Airport. Marge and George moved to Eagle in 1959, where they raised three daughters.

George retired from the FAA in 1977 and he and Marge built a house on the ranch where Marge was born, on East Elk Creek north of New Castle. The two traveled many places throughout the world during their retirement, but he always preferred to be on the ranch during the beautiful summers there.

George is survived by his wife of 59 years; his three daughters, Susan Chandler-Reed (husband Alan Reed), Kathy Chandler-Henry (husband George Henry), and Elizabeth Chandler; five grandchildren, Marlise Reed Lee (husband John Lee), Charlie Reed (wife Megan Carney Reed), Zachary Henry, Hilary Henry, and Walter Porter; two step-grandchildren, Travis Porter and Tish Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, and his infant son, Paul Dennis Chandler.

George loved camping, skiing, traveling, working on the ranch, his cats and dogs, and being with his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to HomeCare and Hospice of the Valley, PO Box 3768, Basalt, CO 81621.

Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Chandler home, 3905 Road 241 (East Elk Creek) in New Castle. Lunch will be served.
