Carl A. Lindbloom, lifelong resident of Leadville, passed away in Denver on Thursday. Carl was born in Leadville on July 1, 1935, graduated from Leadville High School in 1954, and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Bond, in Leadville on July 3, 1959. They had been married for 51 years at the time of her death in March. Carl is survived by his son Carl (Nancy) Lindbloom of Minturn, daughter Vanita (Chuck) Talley of Leadville, grandchildren Katie and Chris Lindbloom, Sarah, Luke, and Rebekah Talley, sister Lorraine (Merl) Moler of Aurora, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara (Bond) Lindbloom, parents Carl Lindbloom and Ruth (Johnson) Lindbloom, and brother Fred Lindbloom.
Carl was a beloved figure in Leadville, known for his quiet and thoughtful manner, his devotion to his family, and his vast knowledge of Leadville history, Colorado history, and the mining industry. He loved nothing more than sharing with others his collection of ore and mineral samples and vintage mining memorabilia collected throughout his lifetime. For over 60 years Carl worked in the hardware and lumber industry, starting at Leadville's Western Hardware, then working at Ken's Paint Pot, and finally retiring from Smith Lumber in 2004. Although unable to work as a miner due to childhood rheumatic fever, Carl did work on the surface for Leadville Mining and Milling at the Hopemore Mine for several summers during the 1980s. Spending time with his children and grandchildren, watching sunsets over Mout Elbert and Mount Massive from his living room window, and sharing stories from Leadville's past were some of Carl's favorite pastimes.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. today at the Bailey-Kent Funeral Home in Leadville. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Leadville, followed by graveside services at St. Joseph Cemetery. A lunch reception for friends and family will follow at the First Baptist Church.
