LONGTIME MINTURN RESIDENT DIES. Mary Ann BERGQUIST, longtime resident of Minturn, died in her sleep of natural causes Sunday. She was 83.
BERGQUIST was born Feb. 8, 1918, in Somerset to Adolph and Mary (SOT) KOCJANCIC. She attended Hotchkiss High School, and went on to attend Parks Business School in Denver.
She married Fred Vernon BERGQUIST and they took up residence in Minturn, where they had two sons, Russell and Willis. Fred was killed in a hunting accident in 1958, and Mary spent the next 15 years raising her boys and working in food services at Battle Mountain High School. Both her boys graduated from Battle Mountain High School, and then went on to graduate from college, a fact Mary was very proud of, friends and family said. They said many students of Battle Mountain remember fondly the kind lady in the cafeteria who made the wonderful cinnamon rolls.
After her boys left home, BERGQUIST moved to Clifton to care for an elderly friend and decided to stay. She was active in the Central Baptist Church, the Rebekah Lodge, and the Eagles. Family and friends said she enjoyed watching sports on television, gardening, her church activities and, most especially, being with her family.
BERGQUIST is survived by son Russ (Barb) of Grand Junction and son Willis of Colorado Springs; her grandson, Chris; granddaughters, Sarah, Kelsey, and Brooke; brother Adolph KOCJANCIC of Paonia and brother William KOCJANCIC of Pensacola, Fla. Her husband, Fred, and sisters Josephine and Jenny preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held for BERGQUIST at Central Baptists Church in Clifton on Wednesday, June 6, at 10 a.m. She will be laid to rest with Fred at the River View Cemetery in Minturn. Callahan-Edfast Funeral Home in Grand Junction is handling funeral arrangements.
Cards may be sent to the BERGQUIST family at 188 Lumley Lane, Grand Junction, CO 81603. In lieu of flowers, the BERGQUIST family requests that contributions be made in BERGQUISTS's memory to Central Baptist Church, 3198 F Road, Grand Junction, CO 81501 or to a favorite charity of your choice.
