“Teenie” passed away Saturday,
December 18, 2010 due to complications
from Parkinson’s Disease.
She was 83.
She was born in the small mining
town of Schofield, Utah, July
17, 1927, the same year that
Lindberg crossed the Atlantic for
the first time by air. She was one
of eight children born to Pete and
Katie Zemerzlikar. The family
moved to Grand Junction in 1933
and settled in the Fruitvale area.
She attended the old Pear Park
school, which is now a day-care
and preschool. As a youth she
helped with the family farm and
fruit orchard. Later, as an adult,
she worked for Mesa College in
food service and also for School
District 51 in the administration
office. But the major role for most
of her life was that of mother and homemaker.
She married Norman R. Harris in 1948, they later divorced in
1967. In 1969 she married Ish Austin, he passed away in 1992. She
later married Blaine Dwinelle in 1993, he too passed away in 2004.
In 1978 while married to Ish Austin, they moved to the little town
of Austin, Colorado, just east of Delta. For quite some while they
were known as the “Austins in Austin”. Upon marrying Blaine
Dwinelle in ‘93, Chris moved to the top of Cory Hill and lived in
Cory, Colorado until Blaine’s death in 2004. She then returned to
Grand Junction to be close to and reside with her son, Duane and
wife, Linda. She just recently was a resident of Mesa View Retirement
Center.
Chris enjoyed dancing, the outdoors, fishing, camping, gardening,
canning, houseplants, homemaking and family. She was always
willing to lend a helping hand.
She is survived by three sisters, Albina Papez of Walsenburg, CO;
Mildred Wiemer of Oregon; Mary Shellhase, of Michigan; brother,
Frank Zmerzlikar of Fort Collins, CO; son, Duane (Linda) Harris;
two granddaughters, Cathy Harris (Rick) Mancuso and Karol Ann
Austin; three grandsons, Willie, Ronnie (Paula) and Warren (Jennifer)
Austin; five great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren,
all pretty much from Grand Junction. She is also survived by
numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both
parents and three brothers, Ray, Stan, and Rudy Zmerzlikar. We all
hope and pray she’s up on Surface Creek with Ish, catch-in a fish.
We love you grammy - Austin.
Services will take place at Taylor Funeral Home on Wednesday,
