Betty Irene Shearer Calhoun, Indianapolis,
formerly of Grand
Junction, Colorado, died December
19. She was 89. Betty was the
widow of Emory Calhoun. She
and her husband were both Army
veterans of World War II, and
were active in the VFW in Grand
Junction.
Betty had an adventurous spirit, and enlisted in the Women's Army
Corps, before her two older brothers were drafted. She and other
WACs hitched rides on Army transport planes, and saw much of Europe
that way. Sixty years later, she admitted, "that probably wasn't
the safest thing to do".
She met her husband after the war, and together they lived and
traveled throughout the western United States, including Albuquerque,
N.M., and Grand Junction. She worked as a school secretary.
Survivors include a niece, Carol Shearer Whyde; nephew, George
Shearer, and many great grand nieces and nephews.
There will be no services. Burial will be at Arlington National
Cemetery. Flanner & Buchanan Shadeland Funeral Center is handling
arrangements.
