Dorothea was born on December
23, 1915 to Howard and Nina
Bell Boyd in Weller, Colorado.
She grew up in the towns of
Idaho Springs, Lewis, Rulison
and Fruita Colorado. When she
was 16 the family moved from
Rulison to Fruita where they lived
when her mother died, leaving
Dorothea and five younger children.
Dorothea helped her father care for the younger children for
two years until her father remarried in 1933.
Dorothea attended school in Rulison (Intermountain Adventist
Academy) and Cedaredge High School. The nickname of "Dort" has
been with her since childhood to the 95 and one half years of her
life. Her friends and family knew her as "Dort".
Dorothea married Ernie Lotto in 1933 in Fruita. They lived in
Grand Junction where he was a boiler maker with the railroad. They
divorced in 1945 and Dorothea moved to Washington State where
she worked as a waitress and met her late husband, Walter C. Kaval
who preceded her in death in November 1999. After her marriage to
Walter they lived in Walla Walla, Washington and returned to Colorado
for a short time in Pueblo; spent ten years in Chicago where
Dorothea worked at Time-Life. They then moved to Los Altos, California
where they lived until they retired in 1989 and returned to
Grand Junction. During the time Dorothea lived in California, she
worked at Pacific Press Publishing Association and managed motels.
She is a member of the Seventh-day-Adventist Church.
Dorothea is survived by two sisters, Lois (Harold) Ochs of College
Place, WA, and Janice (Harry) Grubbs of Grand Junction. For the
past seven and one half years Dorothea has lived with Janice and
Harry. Three other sisters and four brothers preceded her in death.
She had no children of her own, however, 19 nieces and nephews
received her love and attention as a favored aunt. She was very special
to them throughout their growing-up years, and they to her.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 18, 2011, from 4 -6:00
