Carl Rowland, 81, born April 1,
1929 peacefully passed away February
1, 2011 at Family Health
West in Fruita, Colorado.
He was born to Wanda and Ira
Rowland in Rockhold, KY and
was the oldest of six children.
Carl grew up in east Tennessee
and moved to Western Colorado
when he was a young man. He
was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served
in Germany until he was honorably discharged in 1952.
Carl was married to Lois Barley, and from this union two sons,
Dale and Ira were born. Later he married Judy Miller and had one
son, Chris. Carl was a beautician in Grand Junction and owned his
own beauty shop, where he made many lifelong friends. He was
mostly known as a musician as his roots in entertainment began
when he joined a traveling medicine show in Tennessee as a teenager.
He continued to play music in the Army and then long after
retirement playing with many local bands. He was a long time favorite
at Jake and Mary's Colorado Club in Mack, CO where he also
played for many years with his youngest son, Chris. He enjoyed his
friends and family and walking his dog to the park many times a
day, oftentimes stopping along the way to visit with neighbors. A
fantastic storyteller, Carl could bend an ear for hours employing
photos as part of his stories. Carl was a true gentleman, a caring father
and doting grandfather.
Carl is survived by his sons, Dale of Clifton, CO; Chris (Colene) of
Whitewater, CO; brothers, Jack (Linda) Rowland, Allen (Michelle)
Gibson; sisters, Jo Ann Barley and Sandie Gibson, all of Grand
Junction, CO, and Sue (Bob) McCullough of Arizona. He has three
grandchildren, Jeremy (Andrea) of Salt Lake City, UT, and Taryn
and Joey of Whitewater, CO. He has two great grandsons and many
nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved and cherished. Along
with his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois and
their son Ira, and his second wife, Judy.
A funeral service will take place Monday, February 7, 2011 at
Callahan-Edfast Mortuary at 11:30 a.m. Interment and Military
Honors will follow at 1:00 p.m. in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks for the supreme
care and love given to Carl by the staff at Family Health West's
Main Street, and to Hospice and Palliative Care of Grand Junction.
They request that in lieu of flowers, donations please be made to
these organizations.
