George Raymond Beckman
passed away February 8, 2011 at
the Aspen Ridge Care Center with
his loving family by his side, he
was 81.
George was born to George
Harold and Thelma Lucille (Roy)
Beckman on November 15, 1929
at the family home in Lowell, Indiana.
He graduated from Lowell
High School in 1947, where he was involved in football and captain
of the team. After high school, he played on a semi-pro football
league until he had a bout with appendicitis.
He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1948 and saw active duty during
the Korean War. While in the Navy, he worked on airplanes at
Glenview Naval Air Station in Glenview, Illinois. After leaving the
Navy, Ray held down several jobs in order to support his family. He
finally settled at Deublin Company in Northbrook, Illinois.
Ray met the love of his life, Patricia Jane Bryan, at the roller rink
in Cedar Lake, Indiana, when they were both 15 years old. Ray proposed
to Pat on the beach at Lake Michigan and on April 29, 1950,
they were married in Chicago, Illinois.
Ray retired from Deublin Company in December 1994, and once
again, he and Pat packed up and moved back to Colorado, settling in
Grand Junction. Unfortunately, the love of his life was diagnosed
with cancer in July 1995 and passed away on December 1, 1995.
During his first stay in Colorado, Ray and Pat discovered Lake
Powell, Utah, and houseboating. They planned several houseboat
trips with family and friends over the years and after Pat died, he
purchased a pontoon boat which he christened the Patricia Jane. He
enjoyed taking family to Lake Powell and various smaller lakes in
the local area.
Ray had a lot of experiences in his 81 years and lived a full life.
One of his favorite Father's Day cards said "To be a good father, you
need a good man". Ray was a good man and will be sorely missed
by his family.
George leaves behind a son, Karl William Beckman and daughter,
Kimberly Elizabeth (Carl) Stanley; brothers, John (Maxine), Arthur
(Gerry), Richard (Eva), Thomas (Charlotte), and Charles (Patty)
