BAD WRECK ON EAST END. A bad wreck occurred on the Midland near Newett on Tuesday morning the 6th, inst. by which Fireman Geo. BESWICK lost his life and Engineer LELONDE was hurt but not seriously, as was first reported. Engine Engineer FOSTER was helping a train up Buena Vista hill and at Newett, near the water tank, blew out a plug in the fire box.
Th engine was blocked , an attempt made to repair it, which of course was entirely out of steam, the head engine with part of the train went ahead to put it away; meanwhile the rear part of the train started back down the grade and struck the dead engine before it could be stopped, knocking the engine off the blocks and starting her down the hill. The engineer , fireman and a brakeman remained on the doomed engine until certain they could not get her stopped, then jumped for their lives, and escaped unhurt. After running about two miles the runaway crashed into No. 8, coming up the hill and both engines and the baggage car were badly wrecked.
The messenger escaped with a few bruises, but Fireman BESWICk was instantly killed and Engineer LELONDE was hurt and badly shaken up, but ill be all right in a short time. The road was clocked for several hours.
Fireman BESWICK was an oldtimer on the Midland and had many friends. His remains were taken at once on a special to Colorado City where he lived with his wife and children.
