Vail Daily obituary: Kevin M. Roley, 1957-2011.

Kevin M. Roley, M.D., age 54, of Madison, Wis., died Friday. Kevin was born March 11, 1957. He is the son of Everett L. Roley, M.D., and Joanne H. (Nelson) Roley. Kevin lived most of his life in Madison, Wis., then Watertown, Wis., and in Vail. He graduated from Middleton High School in 1976. Kevin attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, then Creighton University to complete a B.S. in chemistry. He then graduated from Creighton Medical School and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Madison-Wisconsin. Kevin was chief resident, won many teaching awards and then went on to have a distinguished career in medicine.

Kevin then chose a change of careers to law enforcement. He graduated first in his class for the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy, where he was also class president. When our family moved back home to Wisconsin, Kevin went to the Blackhawk College Law Enforcement Academy. He again graduated first in his class and won the Terry Fell Leadership Award, as well as many other awards. Most recently, he was an active volunteer for the Maple Bluff Fire Department. His love of sports was exemplified in his hockey career that spanned many years from Middleton to the UW-Madison Badgers. He played club hockey for all of this adult life. He was a goalie coach for several years for the Bob Johnson Hockey School, working with Mark Johnson. He loved skiing in Vail. Kevin was extensively involved in his children's love of snowboarding and served as a course marshal, as well as other volunteer activities with the Ski and Snowboard Club Vail. Kevin had an exquisite talent and passion for carpentry and cooking, with his greatest love being his four children.

Kevin was a wonderful husband and loving father, and is survived by his wife, Kate Skaggs, and his four children, Katie, 21, of Fort Collins, Zac, 18, of Steamboat Springs, Maddie, 17, of Madison, Wis., and Sean, 13, of Madison. He is also survived by his father, Everett Roley, M.D., of Greenbush, Wis.; four siblings, Greg (Dulce), Amy (Murphy Anderson), Tom (Hollie) and Mary (Christine Chambliss); step-children Cass Skaggs, 28, of Madison, and Kelsey Skaggs, 26, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; as well as his sister-in-law Deb (Tim Kauffung) Kness; brother-in-law Bill (Sandra Rogers) Kness; mother-in-law Lu Kness and former spouse Debra (David) Govan, of Loveland. He has many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Joanne, and his father-in-law, Patrick Kness.

A mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 5101 Schofield Road in Monona, Wis., at 11:30 a.m. A visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of mass.

The family asks that a memorial be made to the Maple Bluff Fire Department at 18 Oxford Place, Madison, WI 53704.

He will be greatly missed and is dearly loved.
