After a brave, 19-year battle against cancer, Margaret Booth died peacefully at her home in Eagle on July 15. She was 67 years old.
Margaret was born on Nov. 4, 1939 in New Orleans. Her family moved to Garden City, N.Y. in 1948. She graduated from Cedar Crest College, and started her career teaching on Long Island, N.Y. in 1961.
In 1975, Margaret moved to the Eagle Valley, and then to Eagle in 1979. She worked as a real estate agent/property manager in the valley.
Over the years, she has developed a large and loving network of friends – really an extended family. She had great passion for people, animals (especially her cats) and the great outdoors. She will be remembered for her generosity, wit, sense of humor, fierce determination and incredible spirit.
Prior to her illness, Margaret was an avid and adventurous traveler, and was a great story teller of her exploits, whether around the world or climbing Mount of the Holy Cross. She relished living in the splendor of the Eagle River Valley. It was truly a paradise for her.
Family and friends will never forget the sight of Margaret carrying the 2002 Olympic torch through Eagle on its way to Salt Lake City. She was singled out for this honor in recognition of her grace and indomitable spirit in her long battle with cancer.
Margaret leaves her sister, Madeleine Booth of Eagle; brother, Ed Booth of Bloomington, Minn.; along with his wife, Jan; their four children and spouses; and eight grandchildren. In addition, many kids (most now adults) grew up knowing Margaret as a second mother or aunt. She also had two godchildren. Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, Madeleine and Edwin Booth.
Her family owes a great debt to all of her friends (extended family) in the valley who have so generously cared for her over the past few months, as she was able to enjoy this time just as she had wished. We would also like to thank Vail Valley Hospice, Glenwood Medical Associates, Valley View Hospital staff and the people at Heritage Care Center in Carbondale.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 19, at 3 p.m., at the Gypsum Recreation Center. Everyone is welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Best Friends Animal Society — the nation's largest sanctuary for abused and abandoned animals at Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, Utah 84741
In closing, we remember Margaret Booth as she inspired us to take on adversity with unflinching determination, courage and honesty; to live life to the fullest and to care for family, friends and community.
