Ray Victor Romero aka “Ray Ray†passed away at the young age of 29 on Dec. 27. He was born on July 18, 1982, to Ray and Louella Romero, of Red Cliff. He graduated from Battle Mountain High School in 2000 and continued to reside in Red Cliff and work as an excavator.
Ray Ray was a true mountain boy at heart. He was an avid snowmobiler, hunter, fisherman, four-wheeler and camper. He enjoyed every moment that he spent driving around in his Jeep listening to his favorite country and Spanish music in the mountains that he called home. The love of his life and his best buddy was his Shih Tzu named Kamo. They did everything together over the past few years. Ray often took Kamo to work with him. You could oftentimes see Kamo in the cab of his excavator during the work day. They had their own special bond that no one could take or replace.
He also spent time with his new niece and nephew (twins Eliyah and Emmanuel). He had big plans to teach them both how to hunt and fish. He bought them their first set of camouflage gear, which coincidentally, was his favorite colors. He enjoyed watching them grow and learn new things every day. Recently, he was happy to see them learn to crawl and was excited to see who would reach him first every time he walked in the door. He taught them how to dance, which he called “Shake Your Booty.â€
Ray had many friends and was known for his big heart. If you needed anything, he was there to help. He was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off of his back. Even in death, he continued to help others in need by being an organ donor.
Ray is survived by his parents, sister Marissa, brother Steven, niece Eliyah, nephew Emmanuel, and dog Kamo, all of Red Cliff; grandparents Demecio and Barbara Fresquez of Gypsum, Joe B. and Isabelle Romero of Leadville, god-parents Julian and Mildred Romero of Denver, aunts and uncles Dean Fresquez of Red Cliff, Kathy Fresquez of Gypsum, Pancho and Isabelle Romero, Harold and Jennifer Romero, Inez Romero, Marlene Perez, Louine and Ricardo Mejia, all of Leadville; and numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Lucy Romero.
A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick's Parish Church in Minturn. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday at St. Patrick's Parish Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Red Cliff with a reception to follow at the Red Cliff Community Building. Bailey-Kent Funeral Home of Leadville is assisting the family with arrangements.
