A memorial for James Martin “Marty” Dostal is planned for Saturday at Freedom Park in Edwards. Marty was a longtime local who passed away on Feb. 13, days short of his 65th birthday. The memorial will be at 11 a.m. followed by a reception and gathering of friends at the Singletree Pavilion.

The Dostal family traveled extensively before settling in Security, where Marty attended Widefield High School. In 1965, Marty joined the U.S. Army. Marty was a decorated veteran who served as a combat medic in the Republic of Vietnam with the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol, 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. Prior to serving with the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol, he worked as a Medevac (dust-off) helicopter medic and also within the trauma center of the 326th Medical Battilion, where casualties from the battlefield were flown for emergency treatment.

Upon his return from Vietnam, Marty settled in Colorado Springs, where he married the love of his life, Nova Musgrove. Ultimately, Marty, Nova, and son Josh moved to the Vail Valley, where Marty worked in the construction industry for many years.

He is survived by his son, Josh, and grandson Jay Dostal, both of Gypsum. He is also survived by his mother, Shirley Dostal, and sisters, Kaylene and Rolene, all of Colorado Springs. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nova Dostal, father, Roland Dostal and grandson Alex Dostal.

Marty was proud of his service for his country and kept in touch with many of his Vietnam friends. He attended veteran reunions whenever possible across the country. Many of Marty's veteran friends will be coming to Vail this Saturday to remember their brother Marty, along with many of his family members. All of Marty's many Vail friends are invited to attend the memorial at Freedom Park as well. Marty will be greatly missed and remain in the hearts of those who loved him forever.
