Morgan Drexel Douglas Jr., longtime Vail resident, 1920-2012.

Longtime resident and local artist Morgan Douglas passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 22. Morgan “Doug” was 92.

Morgan came from a long line of Scottish horse thieves (a good sample of his humor).

Many knew him as an avid outdoorsman, passionate about golf, skiing and fishing. His watercolor paintings of the mountains, streams and countryside are known throughout the community. Few, however, knew of his remarkable piano playing improvisation — a delight to the family.

Born and raised in Michigan, Morgan graduated from Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. He attended the Cleveland School of Arts. He earned a fifth-year scholarship to continue his study of art in Italy; however, World War II precluded him taking that opportunity. Morgan graduated in 1944 with a B.F.A. degree after two years in the Army.

He and Catherine Ann Evans married In 1942.

It was April of '63 when Morgan and Cathie discovered the magic of Vail their first day skiing on Riva. Having skied several places in Europe and many years in Utah and at Aspen, they knew a good thing when it came to sking. They bought and built here that year.

He is survived by his wife, Cathie; two children, Mary Ellen Anderson, of Vail and Paonia, and Drex Douglas (Debbie), of Edwards. Proud grandfather of four: Carey Davis, of Vail, Taylor Talmage (Ashley), of Paonia, Christopher (Kerri) Douglas, of Napa Valley, Calif., and Jeffery Douglas, of Glenmoor, Pa., and great-grandfather to Quin, Todger, Jack, Cate and Cyrus — the four generations often could be seen skiing together on the mountain. He is survived by brother William Douglas, of Birmingham, Mich., nephew Jim (Susan) Douglas, of Boyne Falls, Mich., nieces Nancy (Joe) DeVought, of Manchester, Mich., Patti Douglas, of Denver, seven grandnephews and nieces, one great-grandniece and one great-grand-nephew.

A memorial service will be held at the Vail Interfaith Chapel at 1 p.m. March 1.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Vail Valley Medical Center, 181 W. Meadow Drive, Vail, CO 81658 or the Edwards Interfaith Chapel and Community Center, Box 1828, Edwards, CO, 81632.
