William "Bill" Budd, an "inspiration to all who knew him," died Aug. 14. He was 80 years old.
Born in Montreal in 1922, Budd moved to Toronto, where he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, serving as a bombardier and navigator in World War II. He attended the University of Toronto, receiving a master's degree in social work. His first job was in Chicago, where he began his career in Jewish communal service. At the age of 40, he became the youngest executive director of the Minneapolis Jewish Community Center, where he was instrumental in the creation of the a new facility that became a model around the country.
The recipient of many awards, he served in Italy as the executive "on loan" to Rome it an effort to re-build the Jewish community, and he became a leader in the field of Jewish Communal Service. On the occasion of his retirement, the president of the Jewish Welfare Board presented him with an award for his years of service, stating: "He has served as leader, teacher, and voice of reason for the field."
After he retired in 1984, Budd married Evie Rosen, and together they moved to Santa Fe, N.M. He remained active in retirement as a volunteer for the AARP and other nonprofit agencies. The couple then moved to Emeryville, Calif., and then to Santa Rosa, Calif., where he continued his volunteer services until becoming disabled with multiple sclerosis. After spending many summers in the Vail Valley, the couple moved to Edwards.
In retirement, "Bill" Budd and his wife, Evie Rosen-Budd, worked tirelessly to educate care-givers and those with challenging chronic illnesses, providing them with information, resources and, most importantly, courage and hope. Described by Rosen-Budd as an "inspiration to all who knew him," he is survived by: his wife, formerly of Minneapolis; children Jonathan and Lisa Budd, Sandra Budd and Rafael Engel; grandchildren Yael and Meir Engel, Aaron and Rebecca Budd, all of Pittsburgh; his brother, Philip Budd; a sister, Isabel Budd, of Toronto; stepchildren Harvey and Bonnie Silverman of Foster City, Calif., and Sue and John Provost, Rick Silverman, Kari Silverman, all of of Vail; step-grandchildren Jessi and Max Provost, Canon and Tyler Silverman, Marki, Ross and Brooke Silverman; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Bobby Silverman.
Bill Budd will be remembered by B'nai Vail at the Vail Interfaith Chapel on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 9:30 a.m. The community is invited to participate.
