Alex C. Urquhart and Velma A.
Urquhart were reunited on Monday,
August 1st when Velma died
at the Colorado Veteran's Nursing
Home in Rifle, CO. Alex
Urquhart's death preceded his
wife of 69 years on April 17th when he passed away at the Hospice
Palliative Care Center of Western Colorado.
Alex Urquhart was born in Limon, CO on June 11, 1921. Velma
(Brooks) Urquhart was born on January 30, 1922 in Buford, CO.
The couple was married in Paris, Texas January 20, 1942 and began
building their life together while Alex was serving in the US Army.
Alex served during World War II in the Philippines then the couple
settled in Rifle, Colorado where they ran a successful dairy farm and
raised three daughters, Vera Rees of Grand Junction; Earline Davis
of Rifle, and Russie Hiner of Brighton. The Urquharts were long
time, active residents of the Rifle community. Alex served on the
school board, in the Masons, on the ditch board, with the American
Legion, with the Dairy Association of Western Colorado, and was a
founding contributor and supporter of the Rifle Golf Course construction.
Both were members of the First Christian Church of Rifle.
Velma was a dietitian for the Rifle hospital and nursing Home for
more than 15 years and was a member of Eastern Star. After moving
to Grand Junction in 1980 the couple joined the Disciples of
Christ Christian Church where Alex served as an elder and Velma
was active in Christian Women's Fellowship for many years. Alex
and Velma faithfully served the community volunteering for the
Cancer Association; they could often be found playing cards with
friends, camping or fishing with family, dancing at the Elk's lodge,
or working in their garden.
They will be missed by their daughters and grandchildren. They are
survived by their three daughters; five grandchildren; ten
great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Velma will be remembered as a feisty lady whose candor was often
comical, and Alex will be remembered as a gentleman who
never met a stranger.
The family would like to thank the AK Home Health Care group
and the Nightingale's Care of Grand Junction.
A graveside service for Velma will be held on Monday, August 8th
at 11:30 a.m., at the Rife Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 3
- 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 7, 2011 at Martin Mortuary. In lieu of
flowers please send donations to one of the following organizations:
