On May 18, 2011 in Grand
Junction, CO Mary J. Trombetta,
Nee LoPorto, passed away of
natural causes surrounded by her
loving family at St. Mary’s Regional
Medical Center.
She is survived by her adoring
husband of 65 years, Mario
Trombetta. For the first half of
their 65 years her life was devoted
to caring for him and in their last half it was Mario that was
given the privilege of taking care of her. They had a fairy-tale romance
since the first day they met in Brooklyn, NY when she was
17 years old and he 15. After many years of courting and in between
a war, Mario had a three-day leave from his duty in the Army
Aircorp and it was in those three days that Mary and Mario officially
joined their lives and started their joyous family together.
It wasn’t long before they were blessed with their first child, Lucille,
followed by her brother, Sandy, and baby sister, Francesca.
Mary wasn’t just the mother to her three children, but to anyone that
needed her to be, including her nephew, Santo and her Godson,
Louis. The Trombetta house was open to any and all that needed a
hot meal, a clean shirt, or place to sleep. You could always hear music
coming from the house, but above that you were sure to hear
Mary singing along to every song. During the war she proudly
worked in a factory making ammunition to do her part in defending
our country. Mary and Mario lived in Brooklyn, NY until relocating
to Grand Junction, CO in 1997.
Some of the things that she is remembered for is a good game of
handball in her youth, swimming at the beach at Coney Island and in
the Pot Holes on top of Glade Park, teaching how to create whirlpools
in the water, pitching pennies, Betty Boop, card games, telling
jokes, slipping fifties from her grocery money (don’t tell Pop),
sharing her recipes at the drop of the hat, banning anyone from the
house that crossed her, her love for the Brooklyn Dodgers, letting
everyone know that just because she was little didn’t mean she
wouldn’t be the one in charge, celebrating Christmas and all the
cooking that went along with it, but most of all surrounding herself
with the ones she loved the most, which included her eight grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren. Her generosity was known
from coast to coast, along with her Eggplant Parmesan.
Mary was born on April 2, 1922, the fifth of seven children born to
Sicilian immigrants Francesco and Francesca LoPorto.
She is survived by her loving husband, Mario Trombetta; her
daughter, Lucille and her husband, Anthony Iuliano; her son, Sandy
Trombetta; her daughter, Francesca and her husband, Herman Morales;
her eight grandchildren, Buddy and his wife, Jennifer Iuliano;
Maria and her husband, Jaysun Loushin; Derek Trombetta; Rhiannon
Morales; Ashley Trombetta; Mario Morales; Nicole Trombetta;
Louis Morales; six great-grandchildren; her many nieces and nephews,
and her brother, Carmen and his wife, Mary LoPorto.
A viewing celebrating her life will be held at Callahan-Edfast
Mortuary on Sunday, May 22, 2011 from 4 - 6:00 p.m. On Monday
May 23, 2011 a Mass will be held at 10:00 am at St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church in Grand Junction, CO. Following, there will be an
internment at Memorial Gardens, also in Grand Junction, CO.
