Lovena Mae Ryden Michelsen
was born March 22, 1922 at the
Ryden Ranch on Main Elk Creek,
north of New Castle, Colorado in
Garfield County. Her parents
were Marvin Delbert Ryden and
Helen Wells Ryden.
Lovena started school in New
Castle in Sept. 1927. Then moved
to Antlers in March 1928 where she attended Antlers Country
School through the 8th grade. She graduated from Rifle Union High
School in 1939 as salutatorian. She attended Western Slope Beauty
College and graduated in 1957.
Lovena married Oliver H. Michelsen on April 25, 1939 at Price,
Utah. They resided in Garfield County from 1939 to March 1948
then moved to Mesa County from 1948 until February 1950. The
couple farmed for all those years. Oliver died Jan. 22, 1950 after
which Lovena and her four children moved back to Antlers. Her
other marriages ended in divorce. She moved to Grand Junction in
Dec. 1992 to be nearer her family and doctors.
Her hobbies included dancing, Square dancing, bowling and
watching her beloved Colorado Rockies.
Lovena delivered mail from the Antler's Post Office to Silt from
April 1950 until April 1954 after Antlers' closure. She worked as a
cosmetologist in Rifle and Glenwood Springs from 1957 through
1982 at which time she retired due to poor health.
Lovena was a previous member of the First Christian Church in
Rifle, Antlers Extension Club for over 50 years, and the Women of
the Moose. She helped organize a Genealogy Club and has researched
and done Genealogy Books for both sides of her family
(Ryden/Gustafson and Wells/Luster) and also for the Michelsen
family. She was a member of the Ginger Cookie Band (a kitchen
band in Glenwood Springs) for 10 years. She was a member of
Monument Quilters in 1996-1999 and a member of the Monument
Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include three children: Christine Corwin (Jim) of Moab,
Utah, Jim L. Michelsen (Betty) of Tucson, AZ, and Carol J. Loesch
(Gale) of Grand Junction CO. and daughter-in-law, Donna of
Longmont CO. Grandchildren are Mike Janes (Melissa) of Grand
Junction, Amanda Janes Weihl (David) of Grand Junction, Kim
Michelsen Taylor of San Jose, CA., Tracy Loesch Cumpson of
Highlands Ranch, CO, and Barry Loesch of Loma, CO. Great
grandchildren are Amanda and Sean Taylor, Caitlin and Cierra
Cumpson, Dru, Miranda and Dawson Weihl, and Bailey Loesch.
Lovena was preceded in death by her Parents, husband Oliver, son
Gerald “Jerry”, Grandson, Brad Janes and brothers; Delbert and
Franklin.
A service of remembrance will be 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 18,
2011 at Monument Presbyterian Church, 2020 ? South Broadway,
Grand Junction, CO 81507
Lovena will be laid to rest next to her husband Oliver at the Rose
Hill Cemetery in Rifle, CO
