Clarence Edward Babcock was
born February 23, 1923 in Deerfield,
Kansas to David and Zubie
Grace Babcock. Clarence and his
parents along with five of his
eight siblings came to Routt
County on vacation in 1936 and
stayed. Clarence attended grade
school in Phippsburg, CO. When he was old enough, he worked in
several coal mines around the Oak Creek, CO area.
In 1945, while serving in the Navy and home on leave, he met and
married LaVerne Goeddel. To this union seven children were born.
Clarence, LaVerne and their kids lived on a farm up what is known
by most as “The Trout Creek” area. In 1968 they sold the farm and
moved to Oak Creek. Clarence was working at the Edna Mine at this
time. After Clarence retired in 1978, he and LaVerne built a home in
Paonia, CO, where they lived for 16 years. In June, 1984, they lost a
son, James Preston, to a mining accident. In 1993 they bought a
home in Grand Junction, CO where they lived until LaVerne’s death
in 2003. After LaVerne died, Clarence moved to Parker, Arizona.
He loved to walk. If a person were to add up the number of miles
he had walked, it would probably have been in the thousands. Even
at the age of 88 he was still walking. Clarence kept himself busy
making things from used pallets of wood. Bread boxes, toy trains,
trucks and small children’s chairs were items he loved to make. He
also became interested in trains. He once had a setup of eight different
trains running at the same time. Clarence was really proud to
show them off.
In February of 2011, Clarence was unable to care for himself. He
decided to go to an assisted living facility in Prineville, Oregon,
where he would be near family members. On July 29, 2011, Clarence
was called home to be with the Lord.
He leaves behind one sister, Anne Lou Hulvey of Kremmling, CO;
two sisters-in-law, Jane Babcock of Grand Junction, and Minnie
Babcock of Clearfield, UT; six children, Clarence (Marolyn) of
Windsor, CO; Tim (Laurel) of Taylorsville, GA; Barbara (Jerry) Ahrens
of Grand Junction, CO; Don (Darlene) of Prineville, OR; Bill of
Oak Creek, CO; Debbie (Bill) Townsley of Andrews, TX, and
Cammy (Dave) Babcock Hammond of Ft. Collins, CO; 43 grandkids
including spouses; 36 great-grandkids including spouses; one
great-great-granddaughter; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and
friends. He lived a long life and will be missed by all.
