Leila Ferguson Ault was born on Nov.27, 1902 at Medicine Lodge, Kansas. She moved to Hayden, Colo. with her parents in 1910. She attended Elk Head School, North of Hayden, for her school years.
in 1922 she came to McCoy to begin her teaching career where she met Frank A. Ault and they were married April 29, 1924 at Hot Sulpher Springs, Colorado. To this union were born two sons. In 1963, Joan Van Matre Barrera came to reside with the Aults until her graduation from High School in 1967.
Leila taught school for 40 years, the first years in the McCoy area and the last twenty-seven in Yampa, where she retired in the spring of 1970. Most of her teaching was done through her high school diploma and summer school courses until she received her B.A. Degree from Greeley in 1960.
She was a member of the American Assoc. of University Women, the National Assoc. of Retired Teachers, an original Trustee of Yampa Valley College of Steamboat Springs, and a member and Past Matron of Edith Chapter No. 61 O.E.S. of Yampa. She was also the Secretary of the Routt County Pioneer Association for this year.
She was preceded in death by her youngest son, Ralph C. Ault, in 1969, and a half-brother, James G. Hood, in 1973.
She is survived by her husband, Frank A. Ault of Yampa; their eldest son, Mr. James A. Ault of Rochester, New York; one grandson, Frank C. Ault and one granddaughter, Carol J. Ault of Kenai, Alaska; one brother, Richard Ferguson of Golden, Colorado; nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Yampa Bible Church Friday, June 14 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Roswell Kamrath officiating. Mrs. Dorothy Weldon sang "Beyond the Sunset," accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Ruby Forster, and the Church Choir sang "Abide with Me," accompanied by Mrs. Alice Ekstrom. Graveside services were given by the officers of Edith Chapter No. 61 O.E.S. at the Yampa Cemetery. Pall Bearers were Odis Simpson, Johnny Bird, Charlie Ray, Earl Ray, Ronny Kirby, and Don Ullerick.
Members of the family coming for the funeral were James Ault, son, from Rochester, New York; Shirley DeVault, daughter-in-law, of Kenai, Alaska; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Ferguson, brother, of Lakewood; Frnak's four sisters and their husbands; Bess and Dorcie Gray of Denver; Olive and Elmer Barrow of Washington; Dora and Bob Cooper of Paonia; Ludy and Ed Law of Lafayette; Gladys Smith, aunt, of Denver; Welton and Helen Bumgarner and son, cousins, of Kremmling; Florence Wilson, cousin, of Denver; and Joan VanMatre Barrera of Greeley.
A community dinner was served to the members of the family and close friends by the Ladies Aid at their hall in Yampa following the services.
