Steamboat Pilot - September 3, 2005
Steamboat Springs resident Charles Edward Hogue died Aug. 25, 2005, at the Doak Walker Care Center in Steamboat Springs. He was 89.
Charles was born Feb. 23, 1916, in Meadville, Pa.
Charles spent his childhood in Meadville. Pennsylvania is where he learned the trade of plastering from his father, Charles Joseph Hogue. Pennsylvania is also where he learned to dance and hunt fox with his Chesapeake retrievers. To the community of Meadville, his is commonly known as "Bud." Charles left Pennsylvania in 1942 to join the Army.
During World War II, Charles served as the staff sergeant for Company L of the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment Tenth Mountain Division from Nov. 5, 1942, through Jan. 3, 1946. He earned a Purple Heart, three bronze stars and other honors while serving in Kiska, the Aleutian Islands and Mount Belvedere in Italy.
After returning from the war, Charles married Margaret Squire and they settled into a life of ranching in the Yampa Valley. To help support his family during the long winters, Charles plastered many homes and buildings in the Steamboat area, including Harbor Hotel and Holy Name Catholic Church. Charles upheld the value of hard work, but he also made time for enjoying family and friends.
He loved socializing with family and friends, and he often entertained those around him by reciting poems and rhymes he authored. They were always "one of a kind." Charles and Margaret rarely missed a Saturday night dance. They loved to ballroom dance to big band music. Family and friends often gathered at the Hogue Ranch for special occasions. For many of those occasions, Charles topped off the events with feasts that fit the finest.
Services were held Aug. 29, 2005, at Holy Name Catholic Church with military honors and internment at the Steamboat Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers were grandsons P.J. Pene and Scott Pene, Gary Kline, Kent Franz, John Zulevich and Luke Tellier. Honorary pallbearers were Tenth Mountain Division Army buddies Bruce Berends, Art Delaney, Neal Yorker, Lloyd Yorker, George Cahill and Ralph Cormier.
Charles is survived by his wife of 58 years Margaret Squire Hogue; four sons, Charles J. Hogue of Grand Junction, John Hogue of Craig, Frank Hogue of Steamboat Springs, and Mike Hogue of Steamboat Springs; three sisters, Charlotte Rekas of Alexandria, Va., Joann Bahurinsky of Meadville, Penn., and Virginia Anderson of Meadville; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Charles is preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Beth Pene; two brothers, Victor Hogue and Daniel Hogue; and one sister, Harriet.
As attending physician, Dr. Lambert Orton said, "It's hard to see these giants go down." Charles now rests in the shadows of the Sleeping Giant.
As the poets say, "His life was an inspiration. His memory was a benediction."
