CHRIS VAN CLEAVE: 1901 -1987

Chris Earl VanCleave, 85, died in the Community Hospital in Grand Junction on Wednesday, April 22, 1987.
Memorial services, conducted by the Rev. Jake Combs, were held in Root Mortuary Chapel in Steamboat Springs at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. Interment was in the Steamboat Springs Cemetery.
Romaine Mahaffey, organist, played "Amazing Grace"’ and "How Great Thou Art.”
Pallbearers were Gary VanCleave, Greg and Dan Rowley, Kelly Brown, Lawrence Snowden and Bob Mack. Honorary bearers included John Monger, Dick Nelson, Merle Cheek and Chris Combs.
Born in Steamboat Springs on Aug. 31, 1901, Chris was the son of Church W. and Eliza Hitchens VanCleave. He was raised on a ranch on Lower Elk River.
He married Anna Laura Robinson in Steamboat Springs on Oct. 25, 1930. Chris worked as a butcher for Center Grocery and then, until his retirement in 1970, for the road maintenance department of Routt County.
From 1972-1986 he and Anna spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz. In 1986 they moved to Grand Junction. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary last October.
They enjoyed traveling, fishing and camping. They visited Sweden and Norway, Alaska and much of the United States. He was a member of the Euzoa Bible Church.
He is survived by his widow; one son, Don VanCleave of Steamboat Springs; two daughters, Vera Combs of Kansas City, Mo., and Alice Rowley of Salt Lake City, Utah; one sister, Florence Trull of Steamboat Springs; nine grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren. Preceding him in death were one brother and one sister.
Attending the services from out-of-town were Eleanor Reagan, Glenn and lva Allen and Gary and Lisa VanCleave of Grand Junction. Ron and Bonnie Forseen from Cortez; Susan, Harold John and Harold Bristol of Buena Vista. Sylvia Grady and Norman, Linda and Erin Schwieson of Woodland Park; Greg April and Brandelyn Schwieson, Dan and Karen Rowley and Allen and Alice Rowley of Salt Lake City, Utah; Kelly and Brenda Brown, Ronda Worrall and Tonya Dixon of Rangely; Lila McCart and Maxine Turner of Craig; Rosemary Hilkey of Meeker; Walt Robinson of Tucson; Wayne and Lola Mae Bristol of Frisco; Eldon and Berniece Brobeck of Boise, Idaho; and Jake and Vera Combs of Kansas City, Mo.
