Walliburga M. Ralston

Walliburga M. Ralston died Nov. 28, 2011, in Steamboat Springs. She was 88.
Walli was born April 7, 1923, in Grinnell, Kan., the ninth of 12 children born to Joseph and Paulina Dechant.
Walli was married to Jordan W. Tolar on Feb. 9, 1943, and had one son, Wesley J. Tolar. Jordan died March 26, 1945, in the Philippines during World War II.
Walli moved with her son to Castle Rock to be near her sister. During her time in Castle Rock, she met Nilus Stremel. They were married in November 1949 and moved to Steamboat Springs in January 1951.
Walli and Neal had two sons, Richard Neal and Paul Michael Stremel. Neal worked as a welder at the Edna Coal Mine until his death in June 1961.
As Wes attended school out of state, Walli managed the Yampa Motel while caring for her two youngest sons.
During that time, she met Robert W. Ralston and married him Dec. 26, 1964.
Bob and Walli managed the Texaco Bulk Plant and later purchased it. Bob continued to operate the Bulk Plant while Walli opened Rocky Mountain Wine and Liquor Co. Bob later joined Walli in the liquor store after closing the Bulk Plant. They continued to run the liquor store until they sold it in 2006.
Walli was preceded in death by Bob on Jan. 5, 2010; her parents, Joseph and Paulina Dechant; and 10 of her siblings.
She is survived by her youngest sister, Bernice David, of Sharon Springs, Kan.; her three sons, Wes (Sammie McDowel) Tolar, of Russellville, Ark., Richard (Colleen) Stremel, of Steamboat Springs, and Paul (Marilyn Evans) Stremel, of Moss Beach, Calif.; three granddaughters, Tammy Tolar, Stephanie (Steve) Siem and Michelle (Dan) Robertson; and a grandson, Nicholas J. Stremel.
A funeral Mass was held Dec. 3, 2011, at Holy Name Catholic Church, and interment was at Steamboat Springs Cemetery. For more information, call the Yampa Valley Funeral Home at 970-879-1494.
