Logan Crawford, Son Of Founder, Dies In Denver - Came Here As Small Boy To Start Town
Logan B. Crawford, 78 a resident of Steamboat Springs sin 1875, died Wednesday in Denver after an illness lasting several months. He was a son of the founders of Steamboat Springs, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Crawford. He was born near Sedalia, Mo., in 1869. In 1873 he accompanied his parents, a sister, now Mrs. C. W. Pritchett, and a brother, the late John D. Crawford, across the plains in a covered wagon. They left Sedalia May 1 and arrived in Denver June 4. They saw thousands of buffalo and antelope on the way. After a year at Empire and Hot Sulphur Springs the Crawfords located at Steamboat Springs in 1875, the first settlers in the valley, altho there was a thriving mining camp at Hahns Peak. This remained the Crawford home until the end. The parents and two children, John Crawford and Mrs. Mary King, are buried in the Steamboat cemetery.
Logan Crawford, like other members of his family, liked frontier life and was a famous hunter and fisherman. In 1893 he was elected county assessor, the only time he ever held political office. He headed the first government department for predatory animal extermination and engaged in this work both in Colorado and California.
Mr. Crawford is survived by a sister, Mrs. C. W. Pritchett of Denver, a daughter, Mrs. Lee Hoddle of Pacoima, Calif., two nieces, Lulita and Margaret Pritchett of Denver, and a newphew, James D. Crawford of Belcourt, North Dakota.
Funeral service will be held from the Methodist church in Steamboat Springs on Friday, August 29, and interment will be in the Crawford plot in the Steamboat cemetery.
