JOE HITCHENS HAS GONE

Succumbs Quickly to Pneumonia - Was Pioneer in Routt County

News that Joseph HITCHENS of Trull, one of the best known pioneer citizens of Routt county, had passed away in Denver Wednesday morning came as a shock to his hundreds of friends in Northwestern Colorado. While he had been ill since early last summer and had been in Denver for several months, under treatment for Bright's disease, word came from him only last week that he was much improved in health. Until Sunday morning he had recently been feeling better than at any time before he left home, but pneumonia suddenly developed and in his weakened condition he was unable to battle with the dread disease. Death came to him quietly, at 4 o'clock Wednesday morning. His wife and one of his sons, Fred were with him at the time.

The remains were brought to Steamboat Springs on yesterday's train, and the funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m., from the Methodist church.

The month of February is one to be remembered in the HITCHENS family. Joe HITCHENS would have observed his sixty-second birthday anniversary had he lived until February 26. One of his brothers, James H. HITCHENS of Milner, died on February 11, 1920, and a nephew, George E. HITCHENS and a sister-in-law, Miss Jane BLIGHT, both died on February 27, during the epidemic of flu five years ago.

Joseph HITCHENS was born February 26, 1863, in Cornwall, England, and when he was 21 years of age he came to the United States, following his eldest brother, James, who first came to this country in 1873. He came directly to Colorado, locating at Central City, and although but 11 years of age, he worked in the mines for wages. Later he engaged in leasing for himself, until in 1880 he moved to Routt county. Here he purchased the ranch of Joe Moran, pioneer mining man of the Hahn's Peak district, who had taken up a homestead in the lower Elk river valley, and there Mr. HITCHENS had since made his home continuously. He engaged in ranching and cattle growing and he made his home continuously. He engaged in ranching and cattle growing, and he made his ranch one of the best in this portion of the county.

On Sept. 27, 1887, he married Miss Jane MAY, also a native of Cornwall, and of this union six children survive, four sons, Stanley, Charles, Fred, and Fremont, and two daughters, Mrs. Herb COE, and Mrs. E. H. ALTMAN. All but Mrs. ALTMAN are now residents of this vicinity. Her home is at Grangerville, Idaho, to which point she returned early last month, after a visit in Denver with her parents. Deceased also leaves a brother, William M. HITCHENS of Trull, and a sister, Amelia HITCHENS of Pennsylvania.

Throughout his long residence in Routt county Mr. HITCHENS has been held in the highest respect as a man of honorable dealings, of cordiality toward all of his acquaintances, and a good neighbor.
