John Willard "Jack" Stees died April 23, 2000, at the Extended Care Center in Steamboat Springs. He was 81.
Jack was born June 29, 1918, in Steamboat Springs to William I. and Margaret (Cullen) Stees. He attended school in Steamboat Springs.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and Fort Lewis, Wash. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service near Gunnison and for the Colorado Highway Department on Rabbit Ears Pass and Skull Creek. He also worked at the Boy's Market for several years.
He later went to work for Phillips 66 at the Phillips camp on Rabbit Ears Pass, and then transferred to Illinois to work as a pipe fitter on the Phillips pipelines. He retired from Phillips Petroleum in 1982.
Jack was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Leo Hill Post 44. He loved the outdoors, horses, snowmobiling, rodeos, camping, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed baking brownies for his friends.
He is survived by two sisters, Thelma Horton of Longmont, and Grace Cox and her husband, Howard, of Casper, Wyo.; a brother, Mike, of Colorado Springs; a sister-in-law, Charlene Stees, of Steamboat Springs; five nieces; four nephews, five great-nieces and seven great-nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Vernon.
He was cremated. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. May 20 at Peterson Funeral Home.
