Longtime Steamboat Springs resident William Harold Boggs passed away Nov. 23, 2003, at the Doak Walker Care Center. He was 92.
Harold was born March 4, 1911, in Reamsville, Kan., to John and Daisy Boggs.
After serving in the Army in World War II, Harold contracted rheumatic fever and went to the Glenwood Springs Hot Springs Hospital for treatment, where a woman named Sylvia was his nurse.
When he arrived at the hospital, Harold asked Sylvia, "Am I at the right hospital?"
"You sure are," Sylvia replied.
Harold recovered, and he and Sylvia were married in July 1948.
Harold brought his wife to Steamboat Springs, where he had been involved in the hardware business. When Sylvia was asked how she liked Steamboat, she said, "I didn't pay too much attention to Steamboat because I was too busy being interested in Harold."
The couple raised two children, Doug and Garry, and has two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Harold put in a lot of 12-hour days at Boggs Hardware store. He ordered parts in the early morning and did special orders for customers in the evenings. But he never worked on Sundays -- that was his time to relax.
Harold helped establish, along with others, the Veterans of Foreign Wars post on Lincoln Avenue. He served as the VFW's commander for a year.
He retired from the hardware business in 1974, at the age of 63. He and Sylvia then spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz. The couple was married for 54 years. Sylvia passed away in 2001.
A funeral service for Harold was held Nov. 26, 2003, at the Yampa Valley Funeral Home. Graveside services followed at Steamboat Springs Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Doak Walker Care Center in care of the Yampa Valley Funeral Home, P.O. Box 776090, Steamboat Springs, CO, 80477.
