Basil was born Sept. 15, 1918, in Deuel County, Neb. Basil and his family moved to Routt County in 1936 after purchasing a ranch on the Elk River (now Moon Hill Meadows.) Following his years on the ranch, Basil attended the University of Denver. Before World War II, Basil owned the Valley Transport Co. He served two years in the Navy on an LST in the Pacific. Returning from the war to Steamboat Springs, he built the Nite's Rest Motel, served as president of the Steamboat Ski Club and was Commander of the American Legion.
In 1953, he moved to Denver to work for the Martin-Marietta Corp. (now Lockheed-Martin) to begin a long and successful career in corporate real estate. He was transferred to Baltimore in 1963. In the early 1980s, he was responsible for building Martin Marietta's corporate headquarters in Bethesda, Md. After working for the company for 32 years, he retired in 1988 as corporate director of facilities. Basil also served as the president of the Industrial Development Research Council, the leading international corporate real estate organization. He was an active member of the Steamboat Golf Club during summers spent in the area.
Basil is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jeannette; four daughters, Valerie Stasik of Marshall, Va., Ann Taylor of Keswick, Va., Eileen Circo of Edgewater, Md., and Connie Hallquist of Keswick, Va.; and a son, Scott Hallquist of Bellevue, Wash.; seven grandchildren; one sister, Naomi Otis of Yukon, Okla.; and two brothers, Gilbert Hallquist of Mesa, Ariz., and Norman Hallquist of Lewes, Del.
