Longtime Routt County resident E. Dillon Rich died May 13, 2003, at the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home in Rifle. He was 90.

Dillon was born Oct. 5, 1912, in Rochester, Vt., to Ed and Edith Moore Rich.

He soon moved with his family to the ranch his grandfather homesteaded in Oak Creek. Growing up, Dillon worked the ranch with his brother, Elwin.

Dillon graduated from Oak Creek High School and the University of Colorado.

He married Ann Gooding Rich of Steamboat Springs in 1941.

Dillon served in the Army in the Philippines during World War II. After the war, Dillon and his wife, known as "Annie," bought the Yampa Valley Mill and Elevator Company and a home on Grand Street in Steamboat Springs.

In 1958, the elevator was destroyed in a fire following a boiler explosion.

After a stint with the Rich Grain Company, Dillon became Routt County treasurer in 1963. He served as treasurer for nearly 30 years before retiring in 1990.

He was known for his roles in several community theater performances and he helped organize the night ski show for Winter Carnival for many years. After his retirement, he volunteered at the Bud Werner Memorial Library. He was often seen biking to the library in his red Alpine hat.

Survivors include a brother, Elwin Rich; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Chuck Abbott; a grandson, Kevin Abbott; a granddaughter and her husband, Colleen and Russ Ortiz; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bud Werner Memorial Library. A private family service will be held at a later date.
