Steamboat Pilot - March 29, 2003

Former Steamboat Springs resident Douglas P. Buchanan died March 22, 2003, at the Veteran's Hospital in Hot Springs, S.D. He was 57.

Doug was born March 16, 1946, in Steamboat to parents Norman and Alice Buchanan. Doug attended school in Steamboat and graduated from Steamboat Springs High School.

Shortly after graduation, Doug enlisted in the Army. He served our country from 1965 to 1967 in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Silver Star for heroism for successfully evacuating every wounded soldier of his communications platoon while under fire. Doug also served four years as a standby reserve.

Doug was a cowboy all his life, and he lived life like he wanted to.

He is survived by two brothers, Ed Buchanan of Baggs, Wyo., and Mike Buchanan of Pavilion, Wyo.; four sisters, Ellen Burkett of Newman, Ga., Julia Kuney of Steamboat, Phyllis Bettger of Byron, Wyo., and Pat Peck of Buffalo, Wyo.; two stepchildren, Tony Johnson of Glenn, Neb., and Genny Cowell of Crawford, Neb.; his special companion of 13 years, Ruth Stark; and six grandchildren.

A Mass of Resurrection was held Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Holy Name Catholic Church.
