Eldon W. Brummett passed away Aug. 10, 2001, at the Doak Walker Care Center. He was 91.
Eldon was born July 26, 1910, in Lincoln, Mo. to William and Ina Brummett.
At the age of 5, the family moved to Chugwater, Wy. where he graduated from high school. He attended the University of Wyoming earning a degree in accounting and business administration. While at Wyoming, he lettered in track all four years.
Eldon met his wife, Margaret Francis while they were both students at the University of Wyoming. They were married in Rock Springs, Wy. June 13, 1936.
They later moved to Denver where he was employed with a certified public accounting firm.
During World War II Eldon was called to active duty as an Army Air Corp officer. He was stationed at several different bases throughout the United States as well as in the South Pacific. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
After the war, the family moved back to Colorado and settled in Steamboat Springs in 1946.
Eldon's career spanned many businesses including his accounting, insurance and real estate businesses which he retired from.
Eldon was very active in the community. He was a member of the Steamboat Springs Lions Club, the Elk Mountain Masonic Lodge, the VFW and American Legion since 1946.
He served as Secretary Treasurer of the Steamboat Ski Club for several years.
He served as Town Clerk from 1954 to 1959, served two terms on Town Council and on many District Court Commissions. He helped form the Northwest Colorado Board of Realtors and served as president for three years.
He was a founding member of the Steamboat Golf Club. In his later years, he served on the Senior Council through the Visiting Nurse Association. He worked tirelessly raising funds for the new Yampa Valley Medical Center.
In 1991, Eldon was the recipient of the Tread of Pioneers Museum Leckenby Pioneer Award for "enriching the quality of life in Routt County by serving the public institutions of the area, and contributing significantly to the county's heritage."
Eldon is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, and his daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Nordlie.
He is survived by two daughters, Jeanne Wager of Steamboat Springs and Debra Cambron of Denver; three grandsons; 10 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandson.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Steamboat Springs with Rev. Larry Oman officiating. Pallbearers included his two son-in-laws, Thomas Wager and Earl Cambron; three grandsons, Curtis Nordlie, Major Craig Nordlie, USAF, and Sean Wager and long-time friend William Haight of Steamboat Springs. The final disposition took place at the Steamboat Springs Cemetery with military honors provided.
