Marilyn Johnson Ramunno passed away at age 73 on Nov. 1, 2007, in Steamboat Springs, surrounded by all her children after an incredibly courageous battle with cancer. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her five children and their families: Carolyn and Gary Savoren, Kayla, Chelsey, and Hannah of Colorado Springs; John and Cindy Ramunno, Amy, Lacy, Matty, Rick and Mike of Eagle; Tony and Monica Ramunno, Cori and Jenna of Monument; Joe and Sandy Ramunno, Niko and Calli of Grand Junction; and Kathy and Gene Dixon, Adam, Luke, Talia and Mya of Hemet, California. She is also survived by her two devoted and loved brothers, Herbert and Charlotte Johnson of Sheridan, Wyo., and Edward Johnson of Golden.
Marilyn was born in Denver to Herbert and Alice Johnson on May 21, 1934. She attended South High School and then Arvada High School where she was on the honor roll, was the chorus accompanist, newspaper editor, Pep Club President, a cheerleader, and the Homecoming Queen; earning a joint-honor scholarship to any state supported institute of higher learning. She attended CU for her first two years, majoring in physical therapy. After her sophomore year her high school sweetheart, Carl Ramunno, returned home from serving two years in the Korean War. He and Marilyn were married in a garden wedding in Arvada on August 14, 1953. They then both attended Colorado State College of Education, now The University of Northern Colorado, where Marilyn majored in business education and minored in science.
Marilyn and Carl moved to Steamboat in 1956 with their baby, Carolyn. Carl began his teaching and coaching career at Steamboat Springs High School. During the next several years they established their lives in Steamboat, building a house and having four more children. When her youngest daughter, Kathy, started kindergarten in 1969, Marilyn began a 24-year career teaching business classes at Steamboat Springs High School. Marilyn also played the organ for her church and taught piano lessons in her home for almost 50 years, beginning in 1958 and continuing until just this past summer.
She and Carl loved their lives in Steamboat and felt so fortunate to be able to live in such a beautiful place and to have so many wonderful friends. They both enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, skiing, hiking, skating, dancing and tennis. Marilyn sat through what would amount to thousands of matches, meets, games, tournaments, and recitals, and she and Carl were always their kids' biggest fans.
This continued to the present day as all of her children either coached or married coaches, and every fall Marilyn would fill in her calendar with their schedules and figure out how she could travel to the most games. Marilyn also loved, and was so proud of, each and every grandchild and celebrated all of their many accomplishments. Over the years Marilyn taught Sunday school and Bible school, was a Girl Scout leader, a member of Bata Sigma Phi, and many prayer groups. She took up the violin in her 60s and joined the Steamboat Chamber Orchestra. She never ceased learning, taking various classes, did some counseling at the Pregnancy Center, and was a Kiddie Kuddler at Grandkids Day Care.
Marilyn was the epitome of a 'glass is half-full' person. She was an eternal optimist, and her infectious smile could light up any room. She chose people over things always and lived her life with enormous integrity and grace. Throughout her illness, she did everything she could to pave the way for the people who loved her, assuring us that she would be OK and that she felt so lucky to have had the life she did. She did it right, with unwavering faith and her eyes always on the prize, and we are grateful beyond words for her example.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5.

A funeral for Marilyn J. Ramunno is 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Interment at Steamboat Springs Cemetery will follow. A luncheon will be held at the church.
