Ruth G. Moss passed away on
Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at
Mantey Heights Care Center. She
was 95 years of age.
Ruth G. Moss was born on December
3, 1916 in Antelope
Springs, CO to Samuel S. and
Esther Julia (Sandstead) Gilliland.
She spent her childhood in
Bloom, CO and attended schools
in Florence and Fort Collins, CO. Ruth graduated from Manuel
Training High School in Denver, CO. While there, she created many
sculptures and works from clay. Ruth attended John Herron Art Institute
in Indianapolis, IN and then Students Art League in New
York City, where she studied under many artists.
On November 2, 1940, Ruth married Harold P. Moss in Denver,
Colorado. Ruth and Harold were married for 71 years and had four
children. They have been residents of Grand Junction since 1951,
but had also lived in New York City and Denver.
Ruth was a member of First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ,
P.E.O., Daughters of the Nile, the Garden Club, where she was
president for three years. Ruth was also a member of Altrusa for
over 50 years, and was a founding member of the Western Colorado
Center for the Arts. She enjoyed landscape and portrait paintings, as
well as watercolor and oil paintings. Ruth taught cake decorating at
Mesa College for 20 years. A book of her art work was published in
2000 with the updated version published in 2007.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Judge Harold P. Moss of Grand
Junction, CO; sons, Bardwell C. (Kathleen) Moss of Tulsa, OK, and
Dr. Arthur L. (Ruth Y.) Moss of Logan, UT; one brother, Dr. Hap
Gilliland of Billings, MT; one daughter-in-law, Cathy Moss of Louisville,
KY; son-in-law, William C. Weiler (Marcie), five grandchildren,
and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
her parents, Samuel S. and Esther Julia Gilliland; son, Dr. Lyle R.
Moss; daughter, Gayle S. Weiler; one brother, and one sister.
A funeral service will held on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at First
Christian Church-Disciples of Christ at 1:00 p.m. with burial following
at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
