Edward August Woynowskie
passed away on November 26,
2011. Ed was an amazing 100
years old.
He was born and raised in Portland,
Oregon. Ed had a natural
talent as a mechanic and figured
out how to fix anything mechanical.
When his dad's car did not run, he figured out how to fix it. He
rebuilt a motorcycle and rode it cross-country to the 1933 World's
Fair in Chicago sleeping in barns and haystacks along the way. As a
young man, he learned how to fly an airplane as well as repair it. He
acquired his first airplane, a Globe Swift, by trading a canoe for it.
He married Doris (Stub) Halvorsen April 3, 1944. Shortly after
their marriage, he reported to the Navy to serve his country in World
War II. After boot camp and training, he was assigned to the USS
Biscayne as the ship electrician. Ed was released from the Navy in
late 1946. Ed and Doris traveled the lower 48 looking for a place to
settle as he had TB. They came to Fruita, CO in the summer of 1949
and decided this was the place for them. Ed ran a garage and service
station for many years in Fruita. He never forgot his love for flying
and owned many small airplanes in his lifetime. During his retirement,
he built and flew over two dozen experimental aircraft in his
home and garage. He was an active member of the local EAA chapter.
A major highlight for Ed was his recent trip on the fifth and final
Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He was accompanied by his
grandson, Bryan (a 20-year Army Veteran), and Damion Smuin, a
nurse from Eagle Ridge of Grand Valley. Ed was proud, pleased and
honored that he was able to be on the flight. On his return, he could
not say enough about how much that trip meant to him.
Ed is survived by his children, Ed and Dick of Portland, Oregon
(from a prior marriage); Kim of Grand Junction; Kathleen (Saul)
Escalera of Cochabamba, Bolivia; Karla (Clint) Miller of Palisade;
seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Ed was preceded
in death by his wife, Doris.
A military funeral will be held at the Veterans Memorial Gardens
of Western Colorado, 2830 Riverside Parkway, Grand Junction, CO
on December 12 at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the local
EAA-800 Chapter, Western Rockies Federal Credit Union, 577
Kokopelli Blvd., Fruita CO 81521.
