Edwina "Eddie" Ellis Eastman
died January 3, 2012, in Paonia,
Colorado. She was 94.
A memorial service will be held
at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January
14, 2012 at Taylor Funeral
Service Chapel, 209 Bridge St.,
Hotchkiss, Colorado.
Alice Edwina Ellis was born in Birmingham, Alabama on January
10, 1917 to Edwin and Alice (Scott) Ellis and was raised in Short
Hills, New Jersey.
Eddie graduated from Stanford University in 1939, and it was at
Stanford that she met Ben. They were married on November 3, 1939
and had three sons. They lived in New York, Seattle and Woodside,
California before moving to Hotchkiss in 1959. Ben died in 2002.
Eddie was involved in various artistic endeavors for many years
and began studying painting with the Sage Dome Watercolorists in
Hotchkiss. She loved the wild flowers and botany of the North Fork
region and the high country of Colorado and eventually incorporated
dried flowers, grasses and leaves in her paintings. Her ashes
will be spread in a meadow on Grand Mesa with Ben's amidst a riot
of wildflowers.
Eddie served her community wherever she lived. She belonged to
PTA’s and performed committee work to support and better the
schools in Woodside. She served on the Planning and Zoning Board
of Delta County, the Hotchkiss Library Board, Common Cause of
Colorado, the American Association of University Women, the
League of Women Voters, the Hotchkiss Fine Arts Association, and
the Sage Dome Watercolorists.
Eddie is survived by her sons, Ben Jr. (Lori) of Denver; Gary
(Kathy) of Ft. Collins; Peter of Hotchkiss; seven grandchildren,
seven great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.
The family asks that donations be made to The High Country News
Research Fund, P.O. Box 1090, Paonia, Colorado 81428.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral
Service and Crematory.
