Harry Robert “Mac” McGuiness
of Grand Junction, CO went to be
with the Lord on January 4, 2012.
He was 83 years young and
passed away as a result of renal
failure. He was known only as
“Mac” to many people.
Mac was born in Stockton, CA
to Henry M. McGuiness and Helen (Butts) McGuiness. His mother
passed away with tuberculosis when he was only an infant and he
was raised in San Jose, CA by his father and many doting relatives.
He was known as “Little Harry” to all his family.
He joined the Navy in January 1946 and was honorably discharged
in December 1947. He served on a USS LSM (Landing Ship Medium)
in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge he returned to San
Jose and married Mary Ruth Deal and together they had four children.
Years later they divorced and in 1968 he married Shirley Harrison,
who had a young son. Mac and Shirley were married for
nearly 44 years and together they had one child.
In 1974 he and his family moved to Grand Junction where he first
worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber as their Service Manager. In
l978 he opened his own full service gasoline station on the corner of
18th Street and North Avenue known as “Mac’s Texaco”. The business
rapidly expanded to another station in Fruita and one on Horizon
Drive. The business closed in the early 90’s when Texaco opted
to move out of the area. He then went to work for Orchard Mesa
True Value Hardware in customer service and sales where he
worked for ten years. He was a people person and dearly loved
working with everyone.
Mac joined the Alum Rock Lions Club in San Jose, CA in 1964.
After moving and settling in Grand Junction he joined the Orchard
Mesa Lions Club in 1976 and served in all capacities of club offices
and leadership roles including District Governor of District-6W
from 1985-1986. He was a recipient of many awards including the
highest award the “Melvin Jones Fellow”. He felt it an honor to be a
Lion!
He loved to camp out and do some fishing. Whether he caught any
fish or not didn’t matter. It was a time for thinking and relaxing. He
had a great sense of humor, enjoyed making people laugh and dearly
loved his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, Henry; half-brother, Jack;
step-son, James; son, David and daughter, Susan all of San Jose,
CA. He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Grand Junction; son,
