John C. Gunn passed away
January 10, 2012 at Hospice and
Palliative Care Center of Western
Colorado at the age of 88.
John was born March 17, 1923
to John Carl and Lillie E. Gunn in
Versailles, MO where he spent his
childhood. He entered the Army
at age 19 where he served in
WWII as an amphibious landing
craft driver in the Philippine and Okinawa invasions.
After his Army service, he relocated to Denver where he met and
married Jayne Rankin in May of 1955. Together they raised two
children. The family moved to Grand Junction in 1972.
John was a salesman of heavy construction equipment; he especially
enjoyed calling on county road departments and helping with
their road maintenance and snow removal needs. He really could fix
anything; he was often busy at his workbench where "everything
had its place". John loved baseball, camping, fishing, boating,
working the daily crossword puzzle, and seeing the country in an
RV. In his later years, he and Jayne enjoyed square dancing and
spending winters in Arizona away from the snow. Shooting pool at
the clubhouse was one of his favorite activities there. John was
privileged to go on the first Honor Flight from Grand Junction in
2009 to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC.
John is survived by his wife Jayne, of Grand Junction; son, Tracy
and wife, LaDonna of Cedaredge, CO; daughter, Peggy and husband,
Rick Sarten of Grand Junction; sister, Nadyne Ratcliff of
Littleton, CO, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be Thursday, January 19, 2012, at Veterans
Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado at 1:00 p.m.
