Mrs. Karsten was an office
manager.
Survivors include her husband,
Fred; two sons, Brian of
Loma and Russell of Southold,
N.Y.; three daughters, Leslie
Smith of Bethesda, Md., Lynne
Smith of Potomac Falls, Va.,
and Christina Karsten of Grand
Junction; her mother, Kathleen
S. Speed of Grand Junction;
one brother, Thomas A. Speed
of Grand Junction; and seven
grandchildren.

Miriam Lee Karsten, wife of
Thomas Fred Karsten, passed
away on January 27 at the age of
74. Mrs. Karsten, better know as
Mimi was the beloved daughter of
Kathleen S. Speed and fond sister
to Thomas A. Speed, both of
Grand Junction.
Mimi was the proud mother of
Leslie K. Smith of Bethesda, MD;
Lynne Smith of Potomac Falls,
VA; Brian Karsten and Tina Karsten of Grand Junction, CO; and
Russell T. Karsten of Southold, NY. She was a devoted Grandmother
to seven grand children, Ryan Churchill of Manhattan, NY;
Carey Churchill of Bethesda, MD; Emily Smith of Potomac Falls,
VA; Van and Cal Karsten of Southold, NY; and Andrew and Amelia
Karsten of Grand Junction, CO.
Mimi was born in Midland, TX to Mr.& Mrs. Thomas Lee Speed.
Her father was a petroleum engineer and was killed in an oil field
accident in Andrews County, TX in 1945. Her family moved from
Midland and lived in several places, including Wyoming, where
Mimi graduated from Casper High School. She later attended Christian
College in Fulton, MO and The University of Denver in Denver,
CO.
Mimi met Fred Karsten and they were married in Oklahoma City
on July 3, 1964. They moved to Fred’s hometown of Milwaukee,
WI, where they lived until 1971. In February 1971, they moved to
Denver, CO. Mimi and Fred moved from Denver to Grand Junction
in 1987, and until they retired in 2000, she and her husband owned
and operated Karsten Prosthetics Labs.
Mimi was an avid reader. She also enjoyed needle work and decorating
miniature houses. She entered into the life of the community
as a member of The U.U. Congregation of the Grand Valley, the
G. J. Symphony Orchestra and volunteered in the election campaigns
of the Democratic Party, The March of Dimes and other
campaigns.
A memorial will be held at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand
Junction on Saturday, February 18 from 11:00AM to 12:00PM. All
friends are welcome to attend.
