After a seven-week hard-fought
battle, Karen Sue Meyers passed
away May 8, from cancer. It was
a premature ending to a life filled
with adventure and joy. Karen
was born on November 7, 1955,
to Gerald and Roberta Hoey, and
lived in our beautiful state her
whole life.
As a child she was active in Girl
Scouts, Jr. Rifle Club and 4-H Club, enjoying many sewing, cooking
and horse projects. She spent her adolescence in Montrose and
graduated from Montrose High School in 1974.
She earned her Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Mesa
State College and later earned her Bachelor's Degree from Colorado
Christian University to further her criminal justice studies. Karen
devoted her adult life to a law enforcement career. She was stationed
in Alamosa as a trooper with the Colorado State Patrol, volunteered
as a Reserve Police Officer with the Fruita Police Department,
worked as a Deputy Sheriff for the Mesa County Sheriff's
Office, and for the past 15 years has served as a parole officer in
Grand Junction with the Colorado Department of Corrections.
Karen was always up for an adventure. She enjoyed flying, and
belonged to the Civil Air Patrol for many years. Her life's grandest
adventures began just four years ago on February 23, 2008, when
she married her soul mate, Marv Meyers. Together they traveled to
Canada, South America, and many places in between. Friends of the
couple often remarked that they were on a never-ending honeymoon.
She will indeed be dearly missed as she embarks on this final
journey.
She is survived by her husband, Marv Meyers of Grand Junction;
her parents, Gerald and Roberta Hoey of Montrose; her brother,
Danny (Lyna) Hoey of Montrose; her sister, Janet (David) Dukart of
Hutchison, Kansas, and her sister, Betty (Ted) Wolfe of Ouray.
Services celebrating Karen's life will be held Saturday, May 12 at
1:00 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice and Palliative
Care of Western Colorado or St. Mary's Oncology department.
