Kristen Ann Gary of Beaver Creek passed away, Sunday, June 17, in Chicago after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Kris was born in1946 in Buffalo, N.Y. She moved to Boston and became a stewardess with American Airlines. Soon thereafter, she met and married Robert Gary and they lived on Long Island. They followed Bob's career to assignments in Connecticut, Texas, Illinois, Colorado, Florida and back to Illinois.
Kris and Bob skied Beaver Creek the first year it was open, in 1980, when there were only four ski lifts and a tennis bubble. They fell in love with Beaver Creek and the beautiful mountain area and became part-time residents in the early 1990s. When Bob retired in 2000, they made Beaver Creek their permanent home.
Kris and Bob have two children, Dr. Lauren Neaman and Brian Gary, both of whom reside in Chicago. Kris was an active member of the Beaver Creek Club, a founding member of the Vilar Performing Arts Center Guild and served on the Beaver Creek Chapel board.
Kris was keenly interested in the talented young performers in the Vail Valley. In her memory, the Vilar Guild has established the “Kristen Gary Scholarship Fund” for young performing artists in Eagle County. A memorial service honoring Kris' life will be held Monday, July 23, at 11 a.m. at the Beaver Creek Chapel. There will be a light luncheon reception at the Beaver Creek Club immediately following the service.
