Don Gilmer age 83, passed away
in the presence of family on Sunday,
February 4th, at the Grand
Valley Hospice and Palliative
Care facility in Grand Junction.
The son of William E. and Nettie
(Jackson) Gilmer, Don was
born and raised in Caldwell, Kans
a s . D o n s e r v e d a s a 2 n d L t .
Combat Engineer in Korea before
completing his education in civil engineering at the University
of Kansas. On July 15, 1956, Don married the love of his life, Lucy
Ellen Brinigar, of Wichita, Kansas. They resided for a time in Pittsburgh,
Kansas where Don worked as a city planner before moving to
Fairbanks, Alaska. In Fairbanks Don worked in city planning and
management for the Fairbanks North Star Borough during the oil
boom and Trans-Alaska pipeline construction. Following their time
in Alaska, Don and Lu relocated to Westminster, CO where they resided
until the early 1990's, when they briefly relocated to Buffalo,
Wyoming before settling in near grandchildren in Grand Junction,
CO. Don worked in city government in Colorado prior to starting his
own land use consulting business in the 1980's and '90's. His later
work for Universal Field Services took him throughout the U.S. on
various government projects in California, Massachusetts, Colorado
and Wyoming.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Ellen, who passed away
October 13, 2007. He is survived by his daughters, Sabrina Washington
of Grand Junction; Audrey Gilmer-Yeager of Bradenton,
Florida; Amy Genger of Johnstown, CO, and five grandchildren.
Memorial service will be held at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary, Friday,
February 10th at 11:30 a.m. Donations may be made in Don's
memory to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado.
