Marguerite Elizabeth Schilthuis
Barron, age 88, of Montrose, CO,
died peacefully February 9, 2012,
at Family Health West in Fruita,
CO.
She was born September 11,
1923, in Salida, CO, the daughter
o f E d w a r d E . a n d E l i z a b e t h
(Hogue) Schilthuis. The family moved to Alamosa, CO in 1927,
when she was four years old. She graduated from Alamosa High
School in 1941 and attended Adams State College for two years,
then entered Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Denver.
She graduated from nurses training in 1946. On August 18, 1946,
she was married to her childhood sweetheart, Frank C. Barron. At
that time, they moved to Clearwater, FL where Frank was Chief Pilot
for Southern Air Express. During their life together, they lived in
Florida, California, and in 1951, Frank was recalled into the Air
Force to serve during the Korean War. They were stationed in
Tacoma, WA and Boise, ID. In 1953, they moved to Montrose
where they made their home. Mrs. Barron lost her husband to death
in 1987.
Mrs. Barron worked as a Registered Nurse at Montrose Memorial
Hospital for 19 years. During this time, together with Mrs. Homer
Puckett R.N., they organized the Candistripers for teenage girls as
volunteers to help at the hospital. This organization continued for
several years and many girls from this area gave of their time as
volunteers at the hospital and nursing homes.
Mrs. Barron was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church.
She served as an Elder and in many other capacities through the
years. She sang in the choir from the time she was a teenager and received
a plaque from the First Presbyterian Church in Montrose for
50 years for “Singing forth the honour of His name”.
In Alamosa, she was a member of the Rainbow for Girls, and
served as Worthy Advisor and received the Grand Cross of Color. In
Montrose, she was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter BL,
where she served as President for two years. She was also a member
of N.A.R.F.E and A. A. R. P.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Bob
Stucky of Slidell, LA, and Susan and Mike Gregg of Grand Junction,
CO; one son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Deborah Barron of
Alamosa, CO; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and several
nieces and nephews.
Her family was very special to her. She loved the out of doors and
always had a garden and flowers. She especially enjoyed camping in
the mountains. Her hobbies included knitting, reading and helping
others.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Barron was preceded
in death by one brother, George Schilthuis of Alamosa, CO.
Services will be at the First Presbyterian Church in Montrose, CO
on Monday, February 13, 2012, at 10:00 p.m. Interment will be next
to her beloved husband at the Grandview Cemetery in Montrose,
CO.
