Shirley A. Mickelson, known to
her friends as Mickey, passed
away at Larchwood Inns on February
9, 2012. Born June 10, 1930
in Freeman, MO, south of Kansas
City, to Marvin Lee Mickelson
and Nellie Gwendolynn Bogar,
she attended local elementary and
high schools and then entered the
University of Kansas, Lawrence,
where she earned a B.A. in 1952. She began a brief career in merchandising
and in 1957 entered the University of Oklahoma, Norman,
where she earned an M.A. in Library Science. Her library career
was spent primarily at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
She also served at the Kansas City Public Library, Plaza branch. Her
interest in dogs led her to maintain memberships in Pets for Life,
Border Terrier Club of America, and Therapy Dogs International.
With her beloved Katie, a Border Terrier, she visited nursing homes
in Kansas City. Certified through Therapy Dogs International, Katie
and Shirley volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital where they brought
joy and comfort to many patients. Her interests included photography
and music, and she was an avid reader of history and political
science.
Upon retiring to Grand Junction in 2004, she became a member of
First Congregational Church where she volunteered in the Respite
Night program.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her
brother, Marvin, Jr. as well as numerous aunts and uncles. Survivors
include her colleague and companion of 62 years, Wilma L.
Hartman; aunt Marie Mickelson; cousin Gary (Wilma) Bogar;
nephew Kent (Cherry) Mickelson; niece Kathleen (Ralph) South;
and great nephews and nieces, Cory, Jerod, Melissa, Merrilynne,
and Chaz.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational United
Chruch of Christ, 1425 N. 5th Street, Grand Junction on Monday,
February 20 at 10:00 a.m., Pastor Dan Wilkie officiating. Inurnment
will follow in the columbarium at First Congregational. In lieu of
flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Roice-Hurst
Humane Society, First Congregational Church, or charity of your
choice.
