Richard F. Dewey, 91, passed
away on February 11, 2012 with
his family at his side in Hospice
& Palliative Care Center. He was
born on July 26, 1920, the son of
Carl and Merle Dewey, in Grand
Junction, CO.
Richard (known as Dick) was a
graduate of Grand Junction High
(1938), Mesa College (1940) and
Colorado School of Mines (1943) with BS in Mining Engineering.
He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and served as Executive Officer
on Sub Chaser in the Pacific during World War II until discharge
as Lieutenant in 1946.
Dick married Frances M. Eble on January 2, 1946. Together they
enjoyed the outdoors, fly fishing, hunting and gardening. During
their travels in the United States and Europe, they enjoyed exploring
history and the arts. They celebrated with their children and
grandchildren special times including graduations, weddings and
family reunions.
His working years as a mining engineer were well traveled working
for Anaconda Copper Mining Company, Butte, Montana; Standard
Coal Company, Spring Canyon, Utah and Hamilton Overseas
Contracting Corporation, Zonguldak, Turkey. In 1956, Dick began a
long career with American Gilsonite Co., subsidiary of Chevron
Corporation in Bonanza, Utah. He held positions, from the early
days as a Mining Engineer through to Vice President and Manager
of Operations, until his retirement in 1985.
Dick was a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers,
Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Chevron Retirees,
Grand Junction Geological Society, Colorado School of Mines
Alumni Association, and Elks of Grand Junction. He was also an
active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church giving his time to the
Building Committee for the present St. Joseph Church and the Holy
Family Catholic School Foundation.
He was preceded in death by his wife Frances, his parents, and
Brother Don Dewey.
He is survived by his three children, William Dewey and wife Gail
of Silverdale, WA; Louise Hernandez and husband Tom of Lemoore,
CA; Jane Henderson of Oscoda, MI; seven grandchildren
Glen Dewey, Denise Paschal, Ginger Howard, Gregory Hernandez,
Jeanette Henderson, Joanne VandeWerken, and Joshua Henderson;
great-grandchildren, Keegan, Sydney and Eli Paschal; and
sister-in-law Jackie Dewey.
Visitation will take place 5:00-7:00PM on Thursday, Feb 16 at
Callahan-Edfast Mortuary with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00PM.
The funeral Mass will take place at 11:00AM on Friday, Feb 17 at
St. Joseph Catholic Church with concluding service and military
honors at Calvary Cemetery.
