Carsten, passed away Sunday,
February 12, 2012 at the Swedish
Medical Center in Englewood,
CO. She was 88 years of age.
A funeral service honoring
Ruth’s life will be held Saturday,
February 18, 2012, at 3:00 p.m.,
at the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge
#1807 in Hotchkiss, CO with Gip
Gafford and Gary Hanson officiating. Interment will follow the service
in the Riverside Cemetery at Hotchkiss.
Memorial contributions in Ruth’s name can be made to the Delta
County Livestock Association Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Nate

Ruth Thompson was born April 2, 1923, to Gideon and Effie
(Yowell) Thompson in Vilas, CO. She spent much of her early
childhood in Springfield CO, and went on to graduate from Montrose
High School.
Ruth loved her family and truly enjoyed family functions, which
included various sporting activities. She was an avid Denver Bronco
fan and also enjoyed gardening, especially her roses. The pride and
joy of her life includes her success with raising and breeding her
registered Simmental cattle.
On December 12, 1942, Ruth married Billy McMillan. To this marriage
two sons and a daughter were born. Mr. McMillan passed
away in 1961. Ruth later married the love of her life William A.
Carsten on December 8, 1962, in Paonia, CO. To this union two
sons were born. Ruth and William shared 36 years of love and marriage,
before William passed away May 27, 1998.
Ruth is survived by four sons, Billy “Mike” (Patty) McMillan of
Hotchkiss CO; Larry Lee (Sara) McMillan of Ft. Lupton, CO; William
Dean (Krista) Carsten of Hotchkiss CO; Shawn Jay (Lynn)
Carsten of Houston, TX.; one daughter, Lana Rae Gafford of Delta,
CO. She is further survived by 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral
Service and Crematory.
