Vail's oldest “pioneer” has passed away at the age of 100. Sabina Lovejoy Langmaid, “Bunny,” died in her sleep in Topsfield, Mass., on Sunday.
Fifty years ago, in 1962, she and her husband, Joe, built a home on Beaver Dam Road and a ski business on Bridge Street. Bunny fell in love with Vail Mountain both in winter and summer. She loved powder in winter and wildflower hikes in the summer. She covered a lot of territory with Joe and at least one black Lab in the Scout. She was as smart as ever until she died, and her happiest memories were of Vail in the early days. Bunny's life was remarkable. She was born in 1912, a day after Joe, and across the street from his family's home. At age 22, they were married, and in 2004 they celebrated their 70th anniversary. A month later, Joe died at 92 years. They had two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
In addition to their home in Vail, Bunny and Joe had a home and garden on Maui. She loved the beach, the flowers and the warm waters of Hawaii. In both places she inspired reading books and listening to music. After 25 years in Vail, Bunny and Joe returned East and bought a home in East Boothbay, Maine, on Linekin Bay. She loved the beauty of coastal Maine and walked every morning along the ocean. Cruising downeast and poking into the small harbors of Maine, picking blueberries and gardening filled the summers in Maine.
In the words of her niece, Chris, “Bunny made everything seem easy. You never saw her toil, although the house was always clean, the dinners perfect, the greenhouse blooming — I can't see cyclamen without thinking of her. Her skiing was regal — always graceful. I don't even remember her angry ever. Laughing girlishly with Pinky. Always tactful and pleasant. I will miss her generosity and sweetness, her sharp intelligence and memory. And if there is an “up there” she will be skiing with Joe over the clouds trailed by their Labs Tipper, Mandy, Smokey, Samantha and Blackjack.”
Bunny is survived by a sister, Sally Gerbrach (96), of Swampscott, Mass.; a son, Charlie Langmaid, of Vail, and a daughter, Jane Lancy of Danvers, Mass.; grandchildren Kim and Elissa Langmaid, Amanda Kenney and Vance Smith IV; and great grandsons Marlon and Elroy Smith.
Everyone remembers Bunny for her beauty, intelligence, love of skiing, her many friends. She had a wonderful life enjoying beautiful places with loving family and friends.
