Bob Shelton, a longtime Eagle resident, died Aug. 7 in Grand Junction.

He was born June 10, 1927, to John and Edith Shelton in Littleton. He spent his childhood there and graduated from Littleton High School in 1945. Bob was in the Merchant Marines and was posted to a merchant ship in the Pacific at the end of World War II. He returned to Littleton where he met the love of his life, Shirley Wilson. The couple married Sept. 7, 1947, and soon moved to Eagle, Shirley's hometown.

Bob joined the Eagle Volunteer Fire Department and the Volunteer Ambulance Service, serving both organizations for many years. He is a past chief of the Eagle Fire Department and helped to form the Greater Eagle Fire Protection District in 1976. He was the first certified EMT in the valley.

For many years, he served on the Eagle Town Board, as both mayor and trustee. He also was a member of the Eagle Lions Club and is a past Master of the Castle Masonic Lodge. Bob received many honors and accolades over the years but he was proudest of having the new fire station in Eagle named in his honor — Shelton Station No. 9. He was humbled when he was chosen as the Citizen of Year by the Eagle Valley Chamber of Commerce in 2001.

Bob is survived by Shirley, his wife of 65 years; two daughters, Lynda Ruggeberg and partner Paul Weber, and Lisa Burton and husband Dewain; grandson Jeff Ruggeberg and wife Nikki of Aurora; granddaughter Staci Greenlee and husband Travis of Cortez; granddaughter Tiffani Lowe and husband Will of Canyon, Texas; great-grandchildren Tyler and Tanner Ruggeberg; Lane and Tylee Greenlee, and Garrett and Levi Lowe; brother John Shelton of Fort Scott, Kan.; many nieces and nephews, extended family and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Wayne and Don, and his much-loved grandson, Greg Burton.

A memorial service was held at the Greater Eagle Shelton Station No. 9 on Aug. 14.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, 3090 North 12th Street, Unit B, Grand Junction, Colo. 81506, or to the Greater Eagle Fire Protection District, PO Box 961, Eagle, Colo. 81631.

A MOMENT FOR BOB. During the beginning of Tuesday night's Eagle Town Board meeting, a moment of silence was observed for Bob SHELTON.
Shelton, who had been a stalwart member of the Eagle community for decades, died last week at the age of 85.
Town board member Mikel "Pappy" KERST noted that SHELTON served on the Eagle Town Board for 16 years beginning in 1956. He also served as Eagle Mayor for four years from 2966-70. SHELTON helped found both the Eagle Volunteer Fire Department and the Eagle Community Ambulance Service and was an involved Eagle businessman and enthusiastic community volunteer.
"It's probably safe to say that nobody has given more to this town than Bob did," said KERST. --Pam Boyd.
